MISSION
Built on nickels from John Morefield on Vimeo.
This video was put together by Michael Hanson of Michael Hanson Photography. It is the best description of what I do, and the essence of the booth.
http://www.michaelhansonphotography.com/
Architecture 5¢ is a project I started about a year ago to answer architectural questions for people in my community. All it takes is a nickel and a conversation to begin your next project. Is your bathroom too small? Do you need more space, want to add a second story, or start that spring project?
Drop a nickel and ask away…
THE NEW MISSION:
1 year later……
1 booth (needs a new coat of paint)
1546 nickels donated to the Ballard food bank
304 questions asked online through the website
15 amazing clients with great projects
and 228 Architects from around the world asking how I could help them or how they could help me?
It has been a hard year for a lot of us. My story is not unlike many others. The economy is getting stronger but we need to get out there and MAKE our new future.
It is time for Architecture 5¢ to truly become what it was meant to be, move beyond my booth, and get architects back to work and off unemployment!
Clients with Questions + Architects with Solutions = Architecture 5¢
Coming soon in the first of the year Architecture 5¢.com is going to become the hub where Architects and clients can come to talk to one another. A place where architects from all over can talk to each other and collaborate. A place to show your work, talk to home owners, answer questions, and most importantly help you get back to work.
“It is as simple as a nickel and a conversation.”
How are we going to do this?
Step 1: Make it free and accessible to all architects
If you agree with Architecture 5¢ and what we stand for please spread the word, (please wait for the new site while obtain our CC license) and help us to develop the movement. All I ask is you follow 3 simple rules:
1. GOOD design should be available to everybody, period.
Architects are thought of most often as elitist and only available to the super rich. Most of them are good people and would like to help you out with your project. We want to tell all people that they can ask questions. We need to re-educate the homeowner what the role of an architect is and the value they can bring to a project, and that they don’t all wear black mock turtle necks…
2. NO project is TOO small for BIG ideas
No matter how big the project or the size of the budget, GOOD sustainable design can be utilized. Our planet needs responsible design. Now is the turning point to make homes carbon neutral and sustainable.
3. Buy Local.
Support your local contractors, suppliers, and designers. The ripple effect works. Let’s all work together to make better homes and get our economy back on track.
Step 2: Don’t forget to drop your nickel in the can…
All the nickels we collect will go to support local food banks. Remember that most times the hand on the other side of the tin can is a hungry one. With the current economic downturn local food banks have been hit two fold. More people need them, and less people can give to them. We aren’t going to ask every person to enter their credit card for a 5¢ charge but if you can give, and you find the information helpful, please drop a nickel or a buck or two. Right now it all will go to the Ballard food bank in Seattle, but as our members grow so will our list of food banks.
Step 3: Everybody deserves a voice
Most of the public does not know what it means to be a registered architect. Some think that by not having a license a person is not qualified or is doing something illegal. I do not have my license yet. I am working toward it. So I can not call myself an Architect, and I don’t. Until then, I follow all the rules for practicing residential design in Seattle. I am in no way advocating against registration, simply that the topic should be transparent to the public. Everyone with an accredited architecture degree or masters degree will be invited to join Architecture 5¢ and join in the conversation. You will have the ability to post your current registration status and all other accreditations you have earned. It is up to the client and you to have the conversation about the requirements in your city.
We are excited about this new venture and we are going to need your help. We have ideas but need your input and passion! If you would like to help please visit the “JOIN” page and we will be in contact.
